Program Notes

The BFA Studio Art Program of Study is a structured program. There are seven areas of emphasis:

Students can also pursue a plan of study without an area of emphasis — Plan of Study.

Many of the courses are sequential and must follow specific four-year calendars.

The plan of study charts linked to above are designed to plot a program that will enable students to complete the degree requirements in eight semesters. Students are advised to take the Foundation classes their first year. They are also advised to submit work to the Portfolio review within the first year.

Elective courses in Studio and Related Area will help bring depth and balance to the studio courses. These are:

Summer Courses

It is strongly suggested that students plan their course of study to include a summer session at Appalachian. These may include a study abroad experience, one of the intensive five week, summer sessions, or an internship experience


Students should seek formal advising from their advisor but are encouraged to contact any of the studio faculty with questions regarding a particular program or the creative field.
