Applying to Art

People come to the Department of Art for lots of reasons:

Entering the Department of Art and Appalachian State University is a commitment to self-discovery, innovation and self-discipline. It is also a time of great discovery and fun. Our five degree programs are all about creative expression, academic rigor and technical skill. They’re about helping you find your place in the world as a creative individual who aims to make a difference.

Application Process

First, apply to the university through the admissions office and then the department through Foundations Portfolio Review.

If you are a transfer student, apply to the university, then the department through Foundations Portfolio Review. If you are admitted, you can then apply for transfer credit through our transfer review.

Be sure to provide all of the materials requested and adhere to application deadlines.

I. Apply to the University

Apply to the university and indicate Art as your major on the application. Upon acceptance, apply to the Department of Art (see below) one semester before you plan to attend the university.

II. Apply to the Department

After applying to the university, apply for admission to the department through Foundations Portfolio Review.

Foundations Portfolio Review

If you have been admitted to the university and have a portfolio of work and meet any of the following criteria, apply to the Department through Foundations Portfolio Review.

If you are admitted to the Department of Art:

If admitted into the department as an art major,you should enroll in:

AP Credits

If admitted, and you have received a 4 or a 5 for AP 2D Design, you should enroll in:

If admitted, and you have received 4 or 5 in both AP 2D Design and Drawing, you should enroll in:

IB Credits

If admitted with a 6 or better on your IB course, submit your work to the Transfer Review. Materials must be submitted before you enroll at the university.

After completing Art 1001, 1002, and 1003, students may enroll in any 2000-level studio courses. Prospective Graphic Design majors should take Art 1102 Introduction to Graphic Design and Art 2102 Typography I concurrently with Art 1002 Foundations II before applying to the Graphic Design program through Candidacy Portfolio Review.

If you are NOT admitted to the Department of Art:

Follow the steps below to apply without a portfolio. All students have an opportunity to reapply for admission into the Department of Art by submitting a new portfolio (including artworks created in Fundamentals courses) during the next Foundations Portfolio Review.

If you do not have a portfolio:

Students who do not have a portfolio or are not admitted into the department after Foundations Portfolio Review may enroll in FUNDAMENTALS COURSES to further develop artistic knowledge and skill.

2. Submit a portfolio (including Fundamentals projects) to the next Foundations Portfolio Review.

3. If admitted to the department:

If you are accepted into the department with artworks created in Fundamentals, you may be eligible to receive credit for one or more Foundations courses.

Submit a portfolio of work completed in Art 1011 Foundations I and Art 1013 Foundations Drawing to the Transfer Review to request that Foundations credits be given for Fundamentals coursework.

If you receive Foundations credit, enroll in the remaining Foundations core courses not yet completed. After completing the Foundations courses—Art 1001, 1002, and 1003—you may enroll in 2000 level studio courses.

Prospective Graphic Design majors should take Art 1102 Introduction to Graphic Design and Art 2102 Typography I concurrently with Art 1002 Foundations II.

If you do not receive Foundations credit for Fundamentals course work, you should enroll in:

Students who become art majors should be advised by an Art Department advisor in addition to a University College advisor.

Department Advisors

All prospective art majors should attend a Department of Art orientation meeting for Freshmen or Transfer Students prior to their first semester at Appalachian State University. These meetings are held in Herbert Wey Hall.
