Painting at Appalachian State focuses on formal, conceptual and contemporary critical issues - essential to explore the present genre of painting. From introduction to exploration of the medium, wide variety of technical skills and intellectual issues are introduced and explored with the help of class projects.

The necessary concentration on critical theory, cultural, historical and contemporary contextual references are structured - accordingly - within the syllabi of all levels. After gaining necessary control on the medium and painterly skill, students are encouraged to explore their own individual artistic identity and subject matter with the help of conventional/non-conventional media, supports and formats. To assess each student’s progress and get feedback from faculty and class colleagues, scheduling of individual and collective critiques on regular basis is integral part of the painting curriculum.
