The Printmaking area offers a wide and diverse range of experiences in relief, intaglio, serigraphic, planographic, photographic, and digital printmaking. Students are introduced to both traditional and contemporary print processes including digital applications, non-toxic photopolymer, saligraphy, and vitreography. Printmaking histories are also examined and discussed along with contemporary art historical and theoretical issues.
Students are encouraged to critically investigate a wide range of approaches that develop into challenging, personally expressive, visual statements. Through the media of printmaking, students are given the opportunity to establish a broad base for self-discovery and growth as both artists and as responsible human beings.
The printmaking area has two well-equipped studios located on the first floor of Wey Hall. The Press Room houses three etching and two lithographic presses, a vented acid area, a graining sink, drying areas, and work areas. The serigraphy studio has two exposure units, a large spray booth, drying lines, and individual printing stations. A separate darkroom with a large UV exposure unit is available for photo-printmaking applications and a digital studio is currently being developed. A separate classroom space, which is shared with Photography, accommodates lectures and critiques and has separate areas for preparing paper, curating prints, dry mounting photographs, and matting two-dimensional work.
