Appalachian State University Department of Art

Chair Faculty Staff Employment Mission Statement

Working in a college town in the mountains can spoil you for life. Boone, North Carolina, is a college town in the best sense—a place where people say hello on the street and with a vibrant downtown a block from campus.

Nestled in the heart of North Carolina’s high country, the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains attract outdoors enthusiasts year round. Boone’s accolades include National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Outside magazine’s top 10 “Best Towns in America,” and USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards.”

We may not live in a big city, but Boone’s smaller size and surrounding landscape seem to foster the creativity of our faculty, staff and students. If we need a city-fix, we can get one easily enough with a drive “down the mountain,” as we say. In fact, we make an effort to do so. Maintaining connections with the art and design world is critical for us.

Our department is accredited by NASAD and has over 500 undergraduate majors, 26 full-time faculty and a support staff of four. Appalachian State University is a member institution of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina. The university has approximately 17,000 students, primarily in bachelors and masters programs in both liberal arts and applied fields. Appalachian has both a traditional residential campus and a variety of distance education programs.
