All programs in the Department of Art begin by exploring art, identity, expression and creative problem-solving. In the first year you’ll receive a balance of art and academic courses along with an introduction to all the learning resources offered by the university.
You’ll learn the basic vocabulary of visual art with intensive Foundation courses that enable artists to explore their own ideas and interests more deeply and to create objects that have the power to intrigue and transform. You’ll learn to explore your own creative path in many new ways—to discover new connections to culture, identity and meaning.
In the first year you’ll gain the creative skills you'll need to develop into a first-rate creative professional. The General Education requirements initiated in the first year are intended to help you gain a strong and well balanced platform for further study.
After completing the first year, Art students explore specific career paths and individual ways of expressing their own ideas. Each of the five degree programs has a specified sequence of courses that encourage further development and experimentation. Students gain a breadth of knowledge and skill that challenge them to go beyond their previous limits.
