Transfer Review

Transfer students who wish to major in Art at Appalachian State must first be accepted into the Department of Art through Foundations Portfolio Review. If their portfolio passes this review, they can then apply for transfer credit through the department’s transfer review—Transfer Evaluation for Course Equivalent (TEFCE)—a portfolio review that is scheduled three times each year following Foundations Portfolio Review. Prospective art students must pass Foundations Portfolio Review before submitting an application to TEFCE.

The TEFCE committee determines whether or not art courses taken at another institution or non-art major classes taken at ASU will count for degree requirements at Appalachian State University. The course criteria, quality of the portfolio, college credits earned, and numbers of works presented will determine whether or not transfer credit is granted. If credit is granted, the student would then complete the remaining course work and other departmental requirements to earn a degree from Appalachian State University.

Students who meet one of the following criteria must apply to the TEFCE:

Current ASU students
Applications for TEFCE are due on these dates at 9:00 a.m.:

Paper application/CD submission deadlines are not a postmark date. Completed application materials must be in the Department of Art’s office by the deadline date and time to be considered. Application materials may be brought to the art office in person. They do not have to be mailed.

Please Note

You may only submit to the Transfer Evaluation For Course Equivalent (TEFCE) committee once.

Most art courses taken elsewhere will automatically be designated as “Art Elective Credits” and not count towards any degree requirements at Appalachian State University.

All prospective art majors should attend an Art Department orientation meeting or Open House for Freshmen and Transfer Students prior to their first semester at Appalachian State University. These meetings are held in Herbert Wey Hall.
