Improvement makes straight roads,
but crooked roads without improvement
are roads of genius.

Welcome from the Chair

The strength of the Department of Art at Appalachian State is in its dedicated faculty who are committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and creative research. As a new chair here in the Department of Art, I feel honored to be working with this unique and talented, diverse group of artists.

The primary emphasis of the department is visual art and design. The art department believes that all objects, including the space within which we live and the images through which we communicate, affect the intellectual, physical, emotional, and spiritual life. The Department of Art promotes a holistic understanding of and informed participation in the decisions that affect the visual environment. Important aspects of this process are self-discovery and self-expression.

The primary role of the Department of Art within the University structure is to cultivate the student's ability to see, think, and respond in a visually creative manner. The department believes a broad knowledge of art history, art education, aesthetics, art criticism, studio art and related technologies is fundamental to the preparation of artists, designers, teachers, and other arts professionals.

As visual art and design play an ever-increasing role in our rapidly changing technological environment, our art department offers the very best professional and liberal arts education and training. There are six degree programs offered:

The Department of Art is a stimulating and creative environment where students and faculty challenge each other and grow together. The art program here at Appalachian State University serves as a vehicle for students to realize their highest artistic potential.
