Julie Belcher and Georgia Deal : Southern Charms
Southern Charms presents work by printmakers Julie Belcher and Georgia Deal that feature artifacts, images, and language culled from the artists’ personal histories and Southern vernacular traditions. Belcher and Deal make use of a wide variety of print techniques: hand drawn letterpress, as well as transfer pulp printing, screenprinting, and wax resist techniques. Their prints reference elements of book construction from typesetting and typography to page layout and the use of imagery and text as elements of storytelling. Belcher and Deal’s works demonstrate the strong interconnection between book arts and printmaking processes.
This exhibition is hosted by the Smith to complement the Turchin Center exhibition,The Authority of The Book. It was organized by April Flanders, Mary Anne Redding and Jennie Carlisle.

About the Artists

Julie Belcher is an Appalachian artist, based in Knoxville, TN, and a dedicated handmade advocate, and appreciator of that which can be made new and useful once more. She studied architecture and graphic design before helping to launch the hand-set letterpress revival close to 2 decades ago, scavenging to purchase and restore presses long forgotten throughout the Southeast. Her projects include an illustration of American novelist Cormac McCarthy for the cover of the New York Times Review of Books and a series of large-scale monoprints for Whole Foods Cafe table tops that incorporates hand printed letterpress and imagery from her Appalachian Mountain heritage. Belcher runs Pioneer House, a store which sells prints and other handcrafted merchandise online and in person at a retail space in Knoxville.

Georgia Deal is Professor and Printmaking Area Coordinator at the GW Corcoran School of Arts and Design in Washington, DC. Her area of expertise is in Intaglio, Mixed-Media and Photographic Print processes, along with Papermaking and Book Arts. She has served as a resident printmaker at the Smithsonian American Art Museum and has taught at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, NY. She has conducted workshops in printmaking and papermaking at the Penland School of Crafts, the Paper and Book Intensive in Oxbow, MI, and the Women’s Studio Workshop in Rosedale, NY among others.
